Impact failure characteristics in sandwich structures. Part II: Effects of impact speed and interfacial strength

چکیده
In this paper, we describe the second part of an experimental investigation concentrating on the study of the effects of impact speed and interfacial bond strength on the dynamic failure of model sandwich structures. Results show that even small variations in impact speed and bond strength substantially influence the initiation behavior of delamination (location and nucleation time) and lead to substantially different inter-layer crack speed histories. These changes in inter-layer failure history influence the timing, sequence and final extent of subsequent intra-layer damage within the sandwich structures. 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Impact failure characteristics in sandwich structures Part I: Basic failure mode selection
In the present work we present a systematic experimental investigation of the generation and subsequent evolution of dynamic failure modes in sandwich structures subjected to low-speed impact. Model sandwich specimens involving a compliant polymer core sandwiched between two metal layers were designed and subjected to impact loading to simulate failure evolution mechanisms in real sandwich stru...
متن کاملAnalytical Prediction of Indentation and Low-Velocity Impact Responses of Fully Backed Composite Sandwich Plates
In this paper, static indentation and low velocity impact responses of a fully backed composite sandwich plate subjected to a rigid flat-ended cylindrical indenter/impactor are analytically investigated. The analysis is nonlinear due to nonlinear strain-displacement relation. In contrast to the existed analytical models for the indentation of composite sandwich plates, the stacking sequence of ...
متن کاملEnvironmental effects on mechanical properties of glass/epoxy and fiber metal laminates, Part II: Isothermal aging
The aim of this study is to investigate effects of isothermal aging on mechanical properties of fiber metal laminates (FMLs) and glass/epoxy composites. For this purpose, both materials were fabricated using the wet lay-up manufacturing technique under vacuum pressure. Both the glass/epoxy composites and the FML specimens were then subjected to isothermal aging (130°C, dried air) for up to 5 we...
متن کاملInvestigation into The Behavior of Nano-composite Tubes at Ballistic Impact
In this study, the behavior of filament wound nanocomposite tubes under transverse impact loading is investigated. Experimental specimens were manufactured using Epon 828 resin with 0.5, 1.5 and 3 weight percentages of nano silica. Because of the varying nanosilica weight percentages in the specimens, different behaviors were observed; increasing the weight percentage of nanoparticles increased...
متن کاملLow Velocity Impact Response of Laminated Composite Truncated Sandwich Conical Shells with Various Boundary Conditions Using Complete Model and GDQ Method
In this paper, the dynamic analysis of the composite sandwich truncated conical shells (STCS) with various boundary conditions subjected to the low velocity impact was studied analytically, based on the higher order sandwich panel theory. The impact was assumed to occur normally over the top face-sheet, and the contact force history was predicted using two solution models of the motion which we...
